What are custom embroidered patches?
Custom embroidered patches are fabric badges decorated with stitched thread. They are made on a base fabric, usually twill, and finished with a border. People use them on uniforms, jackets, caps, bags, team kits and promotional gear. They have a raised, textured look that is difficult to match with printing.
Because the design is stitched, it feels durable and professional. A good patch holds its shape through regular wear and washing.
What goes into an embroidered patch
Design
Your logo or artwork is digitized into a stitch file. This is where detail is decided, such as lettering, outline thickness and the way colors meet.
Base fabric
Patches are stitched on a stable fabric so the design stays flat. The base also gives the patch its overall shape.
Border
The edge is finished so the patch does not fray. Common options include a merrowed border, which is a raised, overlocked edge, or a cut edge for a flatter look.
Backing
The back determines how you attach the patch. Common options are:
- Sew on: the most secure for heavy wear
- Iron on: a heat activated adhesive, see iron on patches
- Velcro: hook and loop for removable patches
Shapes and sizes
Patches can be round, square, rectangular, shield shaped or cut to a custom outline. Larger patches carry more detail. Smaller patches need simpler designs. When you order, share the size you want and where the patch will be worn.
Designing a good patch
- Keep the design bold and simple.
- Use fewer colors for a cleaner look.
- Avoid very thin lines and tiny text.
- Leave space between elements so thread does not blend together.
- Choose strong color contrast so the patch reads from a distance.
If your logo has fine detail, a woven patch may be a better fit. If it is bold and graphic, embroidery is ideal.

Digitizing for patches
A patch is only as good as its stitch file. We digitize patch designs with the right stitch types, density and underlay so details stay readable and the surface stays smooth. If you only need the digitized file for your own patch production, see our digitizing service and pricing.
Pricing
Patch prices depend on design, size and quantity. We send a quote once we see your details.
