Iron on
patches

Patches with heat activated backing that press onto fabric, a quick way to add a logo or badge.

Embroidered patch sample

About these
patches

Iron on patches have a heat activated adhesive on the back. You press them onto the garment with an iron or heat press.

They suit caps, bags, jackets and uniforms. For items that get heavy wear or frequent washing, a few stitches around the edge give extra hold.

What are iron on patches?

Iron on patches carry a layer of heat activated adhesive on the back. When you apply heat and pressure with an iron or heat press, the adhesive melts into the fabric and bonds the patch in place. There is no sewing needed, which makes iron on patches popular for quick customization.

You can make iron on patches in the same designs as sew on patches. Embroidered and woven styles can both have an adhesive back. If you want to see how the front is made, read about embroidered patches.

Why choose an iron on backing

  • Fast to apply: no needle and thread required.
  • Clean look: the patch sits flat against the fabric.
  • Good for small jobs: easy for teams, clubs and events.
  • Flexible: works on caps, bags, jackets, jeans and uniforms.

How to apply an iron on patch

  1. Preheat your iron or heat press as recommended for the fabric.
  2. Place the patch on the garment with the adhesive side down.
  3. Cover with a thin cloth to protect the patch.
  4. Apply firm pressure with heat for the time recommended for your patch.
  5. Turn the garment over and apply heat from the inside as well if possible.
  6. Let it cool fully before moving or wearing.

Always follow the application instructions that fit your patch and your equipment.

Fabrics and limits

Iron on patches work best on cotton, canvas, denim and similar fabrics. Some materials do not handle heat well. Be careful with:

  • Nylon and some synthetic jackets
  • Waxed or coated fabrics
  • Very thick or heavily textured materials
  • Items that you must wash at high heat

If you are unsure, test on a hidden area first.

Getting the longest hold

Heat sealed adhesive holds well on suitable fabrics, but regular washing and heavy wear can loosen it over time. To get a longer hold:

  • Apply with full, even pressure
  • Let the patch cool completely
  • Add a few stitches around the edge for extra security
  • Wash the garment inside out on a gentle cycle

Design tips

  • Keep your design bold and simple for embroidered patches.
  • Use a woven style if you need very fine text or detail.
  • Choose a shape that suits where the patch will sit, such as round for a cap or rectangular for a chest.

Where iron on patches are used

  • Team and club apparel
  • School and community groups
  • Event merchandise
  • Caps and bags
  • Uniform badges

Common questions

Do iron on patches stay on in the wash?

Hold depends on the fabric and how the patch is applied and cared for. Stitching around the edge gives extra security.

Which fabrics work best?

Cotton and other fabrics that tolerate heat work well. Ask us if you are unsure about your fabric.

Can I order a custom shape?

Yes. Share your design and preferred shape in the order form.

How do I apply an iron on patch?

Place the patch, cover it with a thin cloth, apply heat and firm pressure for the recommended time, and let it cool. Follow the instructions for your patch.

Can I iron on patches to any garment?

Avoid fabrics that melt or react to heat, such as some nylons and waxed materials. Test on a hidden area first.

How do I get a price?
